A Local Guide to Kapparis & Protaras, Cyprus
Kapparis is a quiet, mostly residential coastal area at the northern edge of the Protaras resort region, on the south-east coast of Cyprus in the Famagusta district. It sits between the family-friendly bays of Protaras and the lively nightlife of Ayia Napa, which makes it a calm base with almost everything within a short walk or drive. This is the corner of the island we know best, so here is how we’d spend a week here.
The beaches
The coastline is the reason most people come, and the variety within a few minutes is unusual. Our nearest is Fireman’s Beach (Asprokremmos), a sheltered Blue Flag cove tucked under white limestone cliffs about an 8-minute walk away.
- Fireman’s Beach (Asprokremmos) — 8-minute walk. A small, sheltered cove with golden sand and calm water.
- Malama Beach — 15-minute stroll. A pretty sandy bay with shallow, clear water, lifeguards and a laid-back café.
- Agia Triada (Trinity) Beach — 5-minute drive. A wide stretch of soft Blue Flag sand with gently shelving water.
- Fig Tree Bay, Protaras — 10-minute drive. One of the most famous bays in the Mediterranean, with turquoise shallows and a row of cafés.
- Nissi Beach, Ayia Napa— 20-minute drive. The island’s iconic white-sand stretch, livelier with beach bars.
Where to eat
Kapparis and the road down towards the coast have a good mix of tavernas, beach bars and restaurants. A few of our own favourites:
- Karas — a proper fish tavern, with the freshest catch served with real Cypriot warmth.
- Kalifi — a beach bar for sunset cocktails and small plates with your toes near the sand.
- Kohili— a café-bar up on the cliff above Fireman’s Beach; coffee by day and lovely light in the evening.
- Just Italian — handmade pasta, a good wine list and an easy atmosphere.
Things to do with the family
Beyond the beaches, the area is genuinely easy with children. Most of the big attractions are a short drive away:
- Magic Dancing Waters Live Show (~10 mins) — an evening light-and-water show in Protaras.
- Protaras Luna Park (~10 mins) — classic evening rides and games.
- Yellow Submarine Boat Tour (~15 mins) — a boat trip over the sea caves with underwater viewing.
- WaterWorld Waterpark, Ayia Napa (~20 mins) — one of the largest themed waterparks in Europe.
Getting around
Larnaca International Airport (LCA) is about a 50-minute drive from Kapparis and is the most convenient arrival point. A hire car makes the most of the area, though many of the beaches and restaurants are walkable from the village. There is free private parking at our apartment.
Best time to visit
The swimming season runs roughly from May to October, with the hottest, busiest weeks in July and August. Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) are our favourite times: warm sea, long sunny days and noticeably fewer crowds.
Where to stay
We may be biased, but a quiet self-catering apartment makes a relaxed base for exploring this stretch of coast. Ember & Tideis a 2-bedroom apartment in the Blue Electra Complex in Kapparis, sleeping up to five, an 8-minute walk from Fireman’s Beach. Check availability and book direct for the best rate.
